| Chaucer Reads Chaucer: The Miller's Tale | ||||||||||||
| In Middle English with modern English subtitles. Professor Joseph Gallagher is well-known to students and Literary Societies in Canada and the USA for his Chaucerian Scholarship and for his readings of Chaucer's works. In this film he becomes Chaucer to present The Miller's Tale as the author must have done. The film opens by bringing to life one of the most spectacular medieval manuscript illustrations: Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, Ms 61 Ä Chaucer performing before a magnificently costumed noble audience in a summer garden and fades into live action. We see, throughout the performance, Chaucer playing his audience with the words of his tale, revealing their lives as clearly and surely as he reveals the lives in the tale itself. We see the 14th century; we hear its words and music as they actually sounded. And we realise that the age was an astonishing combination of grossness and decency, of relentless vulgarity and richly elaborate polish. | ||||||||||||
